The Cardwell CollaborativeThe Cardwell Collaborative

Visible from Interstate 10, at the entrance to the MCA campus, stands the iconic Cardwell Collaborative building. The $28 million facility opened in 2016 and is home to the headquarters of the MCA Foundation.

The Cardwell Collaborative is a three-story, 60,000 square-foot biomedical research and technology commercialization building named for local businessman and philanthropist Jack Cardwell.

The Cardwell Collaborative features 20,000 square feet of biomedical incubator space (wet and dry laboratories, lab support, private offices, open offices and collaboration spaces) in a building that brings private start-up companies and university personnel together under one roof to collaborate. In addition to the MCA Foundation offices, Cardwell Collaborative tenants include Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso researchers, the University of Texas at Houston Public Health School, Exova Diagnostics, and a number of technology startups.

The MCA Foundation has formed a strong partnership with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, a standalone medical university located on the MCA Campus. MCA provided primary funding for the construction of TTUHSC El Paso’s Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing building by allocating $11 million of the Impact Fund grant it receives from the City of El Paso as a pass-through grant to TTUHSC El Paso.

The school of nursing building is located directly across from the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine Medical Education Building, and it includes a high-tech environment for faculty and students; a 12,000-square-foot simulation lab used by all regional medical professionals; four classrooms; and collaborative learning spaces.
