Medical Center of the Americas Foundation and Innovation Center Welcome Alejandro Muñoz Mendieta as Investor in Residence

The Medical Center of the Americas Foundation (MCA) and the Melinda and Meyer Marcus Foundation Innovation Center are proud to announce the addition of Alejandro Muñoz Mendieta as Investor in Residence (IIR). In this role, Muñoz Mendieta will leverage his extensive experience in finance, strategy, and entrepreneurship to provide mentorship to local startup companies.

“We are thrilled to have Alejandro join our team as Investor in Residence,” said Nancy Lowery, Senior Director of Innovation at the MCA. “His background spans investment banking, corporate strategy, venture capital, and entrepreneurship. This diverse expertise will be invaluable as he guides our companies on business modeling, financial planning, investor relations and more.”

As Investor in Residence, Muñoz Mendieta will provide feedback and advice to MCA’s startup residents, with a focus on strategy, financial analysis, investor engagement, and leadership development. He will assist companies in identifying sources of capital, crafting pitch presentations, and fostering an entrepreneurial mindset.

Muñoz Mendieta brings his conviction that the Southwest U.S., including the El Paso region, is ripe for entrepreneurial growth. “Despite historical underrepresentation in venture funding, the region has incredible assets - a bicultural workforce, great universities, growing innovation infrastructure, and the resiliency that defines the border community,” said Muñoz Mendieta. “I look forward to sharing insights that can help these companies achieve milestones, attract investment, and ultimately succeed in making a positive impact to our community.”

Muñoz Mendieta brings over 15 years of experience working with leading corporations and dynamic startups. He co-founded and currently leads No Border Ventures, an early-stage venture capital fund investing in entrepreneurs across the Southwest U.S. and Mexico border region. Previously, he served as CFO at fintech startup Higo/Sammy, overseeing finance and strategy. His career also includes roles at Grupo Mexico Transportes, Bloomberg L.P., and JPMorgan’s investment bank. In addition to his professional endeavors, Muñoz Mendieta is an adjunct professor at UTEP focused on entrepreneurship. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BBA from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Muñoz Mendieta’s multifaceted career path has prepared him for this opportunity to give back and uplift the entrepreneurial ecosystem in his home region. His firsthand journey going from working at large corporations like JPMorgan early in his career to the startup world and now venture investing, gives him the ability to relate to founders at different stages. This diverse experience and passion for entrepreneurship and the border region make him uniquely qualified to mentor and support startups in his new role as Investor in Residence.
